Investigative Science

In Year 6, we have been learning about the circulatory system and exploring the gaseous exchange of O2 and CO2 in the blood. As a result, we decided to delve a little deeper and find out more about one of the most commonly talked about gases, carbon dioxide. On Friday, we set up three investigations titled, ‘Dancing Raisins’, ‘CO2 Extinguisher’ and ‘Balloon Fun’. We used bicarbonate of soda and vinegar as reactants and watched as the product (CO2) which was formed began to take effect. The raisins danced, the balloon blew up and the candles extinguished by themselves! As you can see from our photos, we had great fun hypothesising and observing the chemical reactions taking place.
