Our Friends visit from Sierra Leone!

sl_visit_2012

We welcome our friends from Sierra Leone who are visiting from Monday 21st - Friday 25th May, Miss  Koroma and Miss Buck.

They will be in school, meeting all the children and taking part in activities here at English Martyrs. If you see them in or out of school, please make them feel very welcome!

As well as being Walk to School Week this week too, we have organised a sponsored walk to raise money for our partnership to continue - please help with our fundraising efforts.

Where is Sierra Leone and the school?
Sierra Leone is in West Africa and ranks as one of the five poorest countries in the world.
Map of Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is the second lowest ranked country on the Human Development Index and seventh lowest on the Human Poverty Index, suffering from corruption and suppression of the press.

Bassa Town Infant School was established in 1945 for children aged 6-9. The school has 511 pupils and 7 members of staff. (As of February 2012). Typical class sizes are about 80-90. There is no electricity or running water in Waterloo. We have officially been partnered with Bassa Town Infant School since May 2009.

Do you often drive your children to school in the morning or pick them up in the car in the afternoon?
Do you get stuck in traffic on the way?
When you eventually arrive, do you then have problems finding somewhere safe to park?

Please support the children during Walk to School week, Monday 21st May - Friday 25th May.  This is part of a regional and national campaign designed to encourage families to realise the benefits of walking: getting fit and healthy, spending quality time together and importantly saving some petrol money too! For more information, follow the link to the Walk to School website here.
